Small Business Spotlight of the Week: GreenCoffex Amanda | June 20th, 2012

Whether it’s hour fifteen of driving on a long road trip, an early morning after little sleep, or just another day with that “2:30 feeling,” being tired is a drag.  It puts a damper on creativity, concentration, and renders the strongest amongst us listless and grumpy.

While we can all strive to get the recommended eight hours of sleep and plenty of downtime to relax our brains, the vast majority of us turn to some kind of quick fix to get us through a particularly exhausting day. The problem is that the quick fixes– from coffee to energy drinks– all have some not so great side effects. Coffee can result in heartburn and energy drinks can give a person some serious jitters.  Both of them can end in a terrible mid-day crash.

The folks over at GreenCoffex have developed a caffeine pill that has three time release profiles: one that occurs immediately (like drinking a cup of coffee!), one that releases between one and four hours, and one that releases after four to eight hours.  Combined, this means the person taking the pill gets a total of eight to nine hours of consistent energy, with no crash, no heartburn, and no jitters.

Co-founder Juan spoke to me a little more about energizing the world:

How would you explain what you do to somebody’s grandmother?

Granny – I make a “pill” that gives you energy all day long. Want one?

What are some industry specific challenges you faced?

Supplement Packaging is by default messy and crowded. There is too much information you have to display – so it took allot of communication with the designers to achieve clean design with so much to keep in a package.

What made you use crowdSPRING?

It was recommended to me by one industry partner – I saw quality design while browsing projects so I felt comfortable. What was your biggest learning curve/experience?

Well since it was my first time with crowd sourcing, I had no idea how much to offer, whether to guarantee a price or not, or whether to advertise it or not. I learned you can always adjust upwards as you move along. Do it – measure it – and adjust course. Repeat.

If you could go back, would you do anything differently? If so, what and why?

Nope. Our mistakes are our most diligent teachers. Do them as fast as possible (and hope they are not as expensive as to put you out of business)

How do you see your company growing in the future?

Our products are gaining traction the organic way. Having different people try our product and deciding whether it fits their life style. No pushy advertising. We are true to our simple ingredient and reliable technology. We will be a mainstream natural product for energy in every shelf where smart people buy from!

Six words of advice to those looking to start their own company.
