Interview With Ron May – The May Report Ross | March 14th, 2009

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to talk with Ron May about The May Report.

Like him or not (and many don’t), Ron May and The May Report have outlasted the many Chicago tech companies who have appeared in the report over the last decade.

In this 9 minute video interview, Ron and I talk about the origins of The May Report, how it became popular, and his regrets about not moving to the West Coast.

The story Ron tells at the beginning happened when he was five. One of his grandmothers told Ron that she loved him more than his other grandmother. Ron told the other grandmother about this.

He learned at a very young age that controversy brings attention. And he hasn’t let up since.

Who was the grand wizard that came up with the idea of interviewing Ron at a Subway sandwich shop? The door beeps every time someone walks in or out and each time it captures his attention. I had to stop watching. I think I’d rather just listen to it then see it.

The interview just happened. It wasn’t planned and since it was early in the morning, we didn’t expect people would be coming in. The opportunity presented itself, and I didn’t want to let it slip by.

He learned at an early age that controversy will bring attention. This attitude could be the reason for him to table the The May Report. Any way what’s the May Report upto? And why did it upset/hurt the Chicago tech industry? The companies that Ron did research on may have lost their capital and in the present economic downturn may have incurred losses.

That’s pure speculation, Jonathan. Ron clearly brings transparency. Widespread political opinion blames excess for the economic downturn. Transparency tends to curb excess.
