Small Business Spotlight of the Week: Colourbox

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Ever hear of Netflix (or Qwikster, for that matter)? Ever hear of Spotify?  These sites use the subscription business model, meaning you pay a monthly fee and have unlimited access to the library of videos or mp3′s the site has been granted streaming rights.

Well, Colourbox is like that, but for stock photos. It’s a Danish website, so if you’re not in Denmark, you might consider using a browser that can translate the page. A monthly payment gives you access to over 2,000,000 images, and give the promise of not running into any pesky royalty or copyright problems. Right now, they happen to be offering a promotion for a free account and a free picture download.

Henrik took a little time to explain further what makes Colourbox so special:

How would you explain what you do to somebody’s grandmother?

Colourbox is a major online library of images, illustrations and videos, where customers can download and use as many as they’d like, as much as they want, for only US$349 per month. Colourbox has more than 2,000,000 images, illustrations, and videos depicting anything and everything, from all over the world, and receives more than 10,000 new materials daily. All images, illustrations, and videos can be used for all kinds of communication worldwide, and single downloads can be bought from US$3.75.

What made you use crowdSPRING?

We needed a new logo for our site, so we were looking for a lot of different ideas/concepts, not just a few from 1 designer. The possibility of choosing between hundreds of different creative ideas for this project was very appealing. We found the logo we were looking for and are very happy with the final result.

What’s the craziest story you have from starting your own business?

As we work with images which are viewed by more than 50,000,000 people every day, we get all kinds of crazy and funny inquiries and reactions from people.

One time a man called us because he was convinced we had distributed images of him and his girlfriend in a very intimate situation; however, the people in the images were professional models who just happened to look like the man and his girlfriend! Another time a woman called and complained that she had not allowed her boyfriend to be a professional model and be photographed with another woman. Her boyfriend was 25 years old and clearly capable of making his own decisions!

We only distribute images that the photographer has a Model Release for, but some people seem to have doppelgangers all over the world. (more…)

Small business and startups: 5 great self-service HR resources

Monday, November 7th, 2011

The everyday grind of running a business can be tough. I am not talking about wooing potential partners at fancy lunches, or drinks with clients after work, or even the whiteboard sessions that can fill our days. I am talking about the nitty-gritty reality of operating a business, paying the bills, washing the dishes, and managing employees.

Most small businesses and startups do not have a dedicated human resource professional to manage the endless details of benefit plans, recruiting, payroll, and records keeping so those tasks typically fall to a founder or general manager. The responsibility to deliver for your team never ends and can sometimes be overwhelming in its complexity and detail and it is critical that you get it right all the time, every time.

I have found a number of great resources that help me in this day-to-day process, keep me on top of the details, and make sure that nothing falls through the cracks. My approach is to leverage as many ‘self-service’ resources as possible and there are tons available online for everything from template forms to payroll services to insurance marketplaces. These services are efficient, inexpensive, and accessible from anywhere at anytime. If you choose carefully you can save a great deal of money, increase your own productivity, and keep your employees happy with the benefits and services you provide them. Remember, other companies are lurking in the dark, waiting to steal away your most valued team members. The happier the team is, the less likely they will listen to the siren song of your competition and choose instead to stay with you!

Here are 5 great online resources to help with your own human resource needs:

1. Recruiting and screening. There are several  good options for recruiting and screening online and sites like CareerBuilder and Monster.com do a fair job. On these sites an employer can post openings and search for a good match with relative ease and at a low cost. But the results are often less than stellar, with many applicants sending out resumes en masse without taking the time to read the posting or check the job’s requirements. LinkedIn provides some great tools for identifying and screening candidates and allows a business to leverage their own network and word-of-mouth to identify the most qualified candidates. Tow other good online resources are Ceridian and HireRight.com both of which can help you to manage the search and the screening process.

2. Payroll and record keeping. Payroll can be the most time-consuming of HR activities and it is critical that you get this right. When there is a mistake in an employee’s payroll, believe me you will hear about it. And if those accounts don’t reconcile properly  at the end of the year, the consequences can be painful; the IRS frowns on employers who don’t do this work carefully and your accountant will become an evil, fire-breathing demon if things don’t match up. We use SurePayroll, a Chicago-based startup (now a division of PayChex) and their solution is economical, simple, and reliable. Once you have your company set up in their system, payroll is accomplished in 3 or 4 clicks of the mouse and you can be assured of its accuracy. SurePayroll’s reporting tools are powerful and detailed, Quickbooks integration is straightforward, and the interface is clean and intuitive. Another interesting resource for online employee record keeping is EffortlessHR, which provides a rich variety of forms which can be completed and uploaded to the site and can be used to manage timesheet reporting, employee history, benefits management, and the like.

3. Health and disability benefits. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2009 requires all states to set up health insurance exchanges by January of 2014. These exchanges will allow small and mid-size businesses (as well as individuals) to compare health insurance benefit plans for their employees. Several states already have their HIX up and running and others are poised to follow soon;  Massachusetts Connector, the Utah Health Exchange, and New York’s HealthPass are operational and businesses can use those today. In the meantime there are also several private exchanges that operate in much the same way. One of the leading private exchanges is eHealthInsurance which allows small business owners to compare a variety of medical, dental, and vision plans side-by-side to find the best match for their company.

Twitter Link Roundup #109 – Small Business, Social Media, Design, Copywriting, Marketing And More

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Every day on the crowdSPRING Twitter account and on my own Twitter account, I post links to posts or videos I enjoyed reading or viewing. These posts and videos are about logo design, web design, startups, entrepreneurship, small business, leadership, social media, marketing, and more! Here are some of the links that I’ve liked and shared this past week!

The photo on the left is of Dario Cecchni. Dario Cecchini inherited his family’s 250 year-old butcher shop in Panzano, Italy 30 years ago and has turned a small shop into a mecca for foodies, built a brand which is now recognized internationally, extended the business into other areas, with restaurants and branded packaged products, and become a star of the international media and in the restaurant world. The November cS Award and The October cS Award Winner

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Earlier this year, we announced that we would issue a monthly cS Award to honor quality work by designers and writers in the crowdSPRING community.

November cS Award

There are now more than 102,000 graphic, web, industrial designers and writers in the crowdSPRING community. You come from nearly every country on the planet and speak over a hundred different languages.

The November cS Award of $1,000 will be given to a creative who films and uploads (to YouTube) the most creative short video (less than 60 seconds) explaining why you love crowdSPRING.

You have until the end of November to upload your video to YouTube and provide a link to your video in the comments to this post. You can upload as many videos as you want. Videos should be less than 60 seconds and can be animation, live video – anything you want. Be as crazy, serious or creative as you want! You can sing, dance, read a poem … use your imagination.

To help inspire you, take a look at this video from Judson Collier from a few years ago – Judson created it because he wanted to work at crowdSPRING and it’s awesome.

We want you to answer one simple question in your video – “Why do you love crowdSPRING and the crowdSPRING community?”

Throughout November, we’ll highlight some of our favorite videos and at the end of the month, we’ll ask you to help us pick the best one.

Good luck!

And now…. the October cS Award Winner….

Now that’s what I call crowdSPRING

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

If you ever happen upon the cS office it’s a madhouse of…well, normal office stuff. All things considered, it’s actually really quiet save for the occasional passing train, phone call and click clack of keyboards. But at each desk there’s more often than not a musical smorgasbord. We recently polled  the office for their heavy rotation work albums and are happy to present you with the cS playlist (complete with player at the bottom)

Bianca - Theophilus London: “Timez Are Weird These Dayz”

Going by the decidedly awesome moniker Theophilus London, this Brooklyn-by-way of Trinidad  MC brings a style that’s more 80′s nu-wave and grinding electronic beats than your standard hip-hop. You’ve gotta love his nod to the Smiths on the title of 2009′s “This Charming Mixtape.”

Audree – Foo Fighters : “In Your Honor”

Audree goes to prove you can have your cake and rock out with it to; her pick is the 2005 double album from The Foo Fighters. No introductions needed here, this album can go to 11 with the heavier disc one, but the really interesting move is the mellow, reflective side of the Foo’s on disc two. Fun fact: “Friend of a friend” was originally written in 1990 on a guitar borrowed from then-bandmate Kurt Cobain (hence, the “friend of a friend.”)

Ross - Mumford and Sons: “Sigh No More”

A favorite around the cS office, there’s really so much to say about this album and still, you can’t get close to accurately conveying just how amazing it is. This album is urgent yet never loses any eloquence. Above all, it’s just..heavy. Seriously, turn this album up and just TRY not to stop your feet.

Mike - Ra Ra Riot: “The Rhumb Line”

This is just good music. It’s dancy, upbeat, employs a full time violinist- what’s not to love. RRR manages to craft an endearing album suited for road trips and other spontaneity, high-fiving The Cure on the way and tastefully dodges and “indie” pigeonholes along the way.

Chris – DJ Shadow: “Endtroducing…”

You don’t get a whole section of your album’s wikipedia page dedicated to its legacy and have that stick unless it’s a straight-up bonafide classic  album.  Built on countless hip-hop breaks, dusty R&B grooves and early electronica, this is the album all other DJ’s should measure their craft by. Give it a spin and find one bad song. Okay, how about one mediocre song…we’ll wait. See? You can. not. do. it.

Kevin – I Am The Avalanche: “Avalanche United”

Formed out of the remnants of various Long Island hardcore and emo acts, I Am The Avalanche put out a killer debut album, toured like crazy and then dropped off the face of the earth. Six years later, IATA is back with a second album: Straight up punk ethos paired with a moshy stomp and throaty vocals. This album is the hallmark of a sound that’s quickly becoming all too rare

Adriano – U2: “The Joshua Tree”

Speaking of legacies, here’s another album that’s solid through and through. It’s strange to think now, with such a storied career, that these guys were  still in their 20′s and that this was only their 5th album. It’s hard to describe, but you know form the moment “Where the Streets Have No Name” kicks in that you’re listening to something huge and irreplaceable.

Jonas – Bent: “Programmed to Love”

This is “chill” personified. Crafting a lush soundscape of ambient sound with the occasional interspersed vocal track, you have no choice but to relax. Having a rough day? Queue up this mid tempo goodness and drift away.

Amanda – Iggy Pop: “Lust for Life”

The one and only “street walkin’ cheetah with a heart full of napalm” defined an era of punk with The Stooges. That alone is enough for most, but Pop is never one to rest on his laurels…let’s not forget that magical moment where Iggy Pop teamed with Ziggy Stardust (aka David Bowie) himself to release two solo efforts, “The Idiot” and 1977′s “Lust For Life.” A remarkably accessible album in contrast to The Stooges work, Pop shines on the eponymous track, but really falls into the darker rock n roll vibe of the album on “The Passenger” and “Neighborhood Threat.”  A must have album for any collection.

Thanks for listening! If you have any recommendations, let us know in the comments!

Small Business Spotlight of the Week: Juicy Bits

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

Don’t worry, I’m not turning the crowdSPRING blog into smut. This sounds dirtier than it is. If you’re disappointed, you probably know where to turn on the internet to get find what you were looking for.  If, dear reader, you find yourself not discouraged, read on.

Juicy Bits, quite simply, creates awesome apps for iOS (iPhone, iPad and iTouch) systems. Though I’ve already promised my first iOS app download to these guys, Juicy Bits definitely has laid claim to second and third app purchase.  I’d choose Spy Pix, which allows users to build in decoy pictures to photo albums and send encoded messages via email. I’d also be sure to nab 3D Camera. All you have to do is take a right and left angle photo and then choose how you want to view your 3D photo. They’ll even hook you up with 3D glasses to make viewing more fun.

You get the picture (ha!). Mike took some time to explain the actual creation of Juicy Bits, not just the cool services they provide:

How would you explain what you do to somebody’s grandmother?

Fortunately, the popularity of the iPhone and iPad has made this much easier. Apple has also done a great job making sure that everyone knows what an “app” is. So: Juicy Bits makes apps.

What made you use crowdSPRING?

I’m a geek who has a passion for good design; I’m not a designer (there, I’ve admitted it!). I created a very basic Juicy Bits logo for the public web site, but I was never completely happy with it. I first heard about crowdSPRING in a 2008 TechCrunch article, and I thought it was such a great idea, that I bookmarked the site for future use. When I started to consider the logo redesign, I looked through many of the crowdSPRING projects and saw that there were many excellent designers submitting work. That’s when I decided to give it a try.

What was your biggest learning curve/experience?

This is a tough one. Juicy Bits is the culmination of years of experience, and it takes advantage of almost everything I’ve learned. As a result, it fits me like a glove. Maybe the biggest thing I’ve learned is that you can’t fixate on the competition when you’re selling apps for a dollar or two. People don’t check Consumer Reports or do a lot of research when deciding to purchase something that inexpensive. Most of the purchase decision is based on visibility and impulse.

What’s the craziest story you have from starting your own business?

This is the second time I’ve started my own business, and most of the crazy stuff happened the first time around. But, it has been crazy to hear from people about how they use Juicy Bits apps. For example, I’ve had the opportunity to talk with folks from Pixar, Hasbro, Kodak, NVIDIA, and many more. Some of them are fans of the apps, and others write to talk about possible business opportunities. Apple created a large cardboard version of one of the app icons and featured it in the window of their physical stores. That was definitely crazy cool to see. (more…)
