Masked Vigilantes, Punk Rock, Customer Service and Why Apples Turn Brown

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Our customer service team has answered well over 100,000 questions from customers.

As our community has grown (crowdSPRING now has over 120,000 buyers and creatives on crowdSPRING, from nearly every country in the world), we sometimes receive unusual notes from customers. For example, last year, one customer wrote to us with the following opening line: “Hello whores.”

A few days ago, I found the following fun back-and-forth between Kevin, who heads our customer service team, and a customer. That’s a photo of Kevin on the left – it’s the only time in years he wore a dress shirt and a top hat!

The customer wrote for advice about inviting designers to her design project on crowdSPRING. Kevin promptly responded and the customer apparently was impressed:

The customer added:

Always ready for a challenge and perhaps thinking that he was working for ChaCha, Kevin called the customer’s bluff:

Those of you who know Kevin already know that he’s always up for having some fun. The fact that he didn’t quit when I challenged him to a Shakespearean Sonnet competition and questioned whether he really can play the banjo speaks volumes about his sense of humor.

10 things that entrepreneurs can learn from dogs

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Some months back I wrote a post about how, as entrepreneurs, we have much to learn from our kids. Lots of you chimed in about your own experiences and about how much you, too, have learned about business from children. Well, as I was pondering what to write about this week, our family dog, Epee´ wandered over to lick my hand and it occurred to me that her small gesture of affection and loyalty was something that I could learn from. I spent the next hour or two watching her as she went about the business of being a pet and it became clear that she was, in her own furry way, not just an exemplar of the entrepreneurial spirit, but that her life  could also serve as a cautionary tale (tail?). So, with great pleasure, and in no particular order, here is a list ten things we can learn from our dogs!

1. Dogs get excited.

Dogs tend to get excited about the things they love to do. Ever say the word “walk” to your dog or show them the leash? What about at dinner time when you pick up the bowl? Dogs are not shy about getting excited about the things they care about, and entrepreneurs can learn from this. Your enthusiasm should be infectious and your passion should be contagious. When leading teams it is critical that your emotion be pervasive and the more positive the better. Just got a new client? Shout it across the office! Set a new sales record? Send out that email and let everyone know. And wagging your tail a lot doesn’t hurt either.

2. Dogs know when they make a mistake.

Everyone messes up sometimes, and everyone knows it. When dogs make a mistake (often a mistake that involves paper towels to clean up) the expression on their face says it all, “I’m sorry. I messed up and I won’t do it again. Entrepreneurs need to understand that mistakes will be made (both by you and the folks who work for you), but the most important thing someone can do is acknowledge the mistake, learn from it, and not make it again.

3. Dogs are loyal.

When a dog bonds with a person, that’s it,done deal. The end. Finito. They are friends for life That dog will ever turn on their friend and would never do anything to harm them. Entrepreneurs should learn to show the same loyalty to their team, to their investors, and to their customers. Fierce and perpetual, allegiances should be a priority for you and your team.

4. Dogs are grateful.

From the lick on your hand, to the wag of their tail, to the head on your knee, dogs are never shy about displaying their gratitude for what you do for them. Entrepreneurs should work hard to be grateful to those who sustain them; saying thank you to your customers goes a long way, helps to cement relationships, and can be an important competitive differentiator..

5. Dogs appreciate table scraps.

Don’t get me wrong, they enjoy their kibble too, but man do they go crazy for some leftover arroz con pollo! What can entrepreneurs learn from this? Be happy with the small wins – celebrate them everyday as they add up over time and, as anyone can tell you, 5 small wins equal one huge one. Or at least some delicious arroz con pollo.

IS THIS THING ON? HELLO? OKAY HERE’S MY BLOG POST

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

First, an admission: Back in the early days of the ol’ world wide web, I would patiently wait through the screeching sound of dial-up to spend the night in “True PUnx” or something of that nature.

Here’s where my shame comes in … every night, I would select the most hideous  shade of gamma-irradiated -Incredible-Hulk-green to type in. Looking at it would melt your eyes out sorta like that guy at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I guess it was funny to me or I was a troll before I knew what trolling was. But that was then- I quickly realized that my insights on all things True PUnx were overlooked on account of the fact my content was surpassed almost entirely on account of my delivery.

So years later, I find my penitence in the form of cruise control for cool, a.k.a: Caps Lock.

It conveys URGENCY. It lets people know you’re not just frustrated but VERY frustrated. IT ASKS YOU WITH NO PAUSE FOR BREATH ABOUT A PARTICULAR MATTER OF GREAT IMPORTANCE. It has a multitude of uses, all of which amount to shouting. And let’s not forget, it’s kinda annoying to those reading it.

And its time has come and gone. Google took the lead with a much overdue removal of the caps lock key on their new laptop, replacing it with a search button.

Is caps lock really that big a deal? Eh, in the grand scheme of things, not really. But I think Christopher Beam illustrates the point well in his  Slate article on the caps lock removal:

“Modern-day personal computing—surfing the Web, writing school papers, chatting online—doesn’t require nearly as much capitalization. As of 2010, the most-common Caps Lock users are enraged Internet commenters and the computer-illiterate elderly. The key’s location makes it a frequent target for an aCCIDENTAL STRIKE when your pinky reaches for the ‘a.’ Worst of all, Caps Lock occupies prime real estate that could be deeded to a more useful key, like Control or even a second Enter button.”

We have so many awesome ways of communicating with one another, and new ones are popping up every day. But unless we take a step back and work more on how we’re expressing ourselves, the actual focus of our message will get lost.

What do you guys think? Are there any caps lock advocates out there? What other features need to be put to pasture. We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Aw, heck. I can’t resist: THANKS FOR READING.

Small Business Spotlight of the Week: River Moon Coffee Roasting Corporation

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Coffee is a huge deal over here at cS headquarters… it’s how we stay awake to provide you the best online marketplace for creative services! :) So I always love seeing new coffee company projects on the site. River Moon Coffee Roasting Company is an online wholesale retailer of green coffee beans based out of Stillwater, Minnesota in the St. Croix River Valley.

Geoff and Juanita, founders of River Moon Coffee, posted a logo project on crowdSPRING and received over 200 entries! The award went to ctill3333! They want to focus on the visual appeal of their website and e-commerce of their virtual store to succeed with their business and are eager to get their logo up and running!

I got a chance to speak with Geoff and here is what he has to share with all of you…

1.  How did you get things designed before crowdSPRING?

This is our first project!

2.  Why in the world did you decide to use crowdSPRING?!

We thought that crowdSPRING would be a perfect fit for us based upon the recommendation of our web design consultant who had previous experience and very positive results with another client who is also from our area, and is emphasizing the virtual store front as a large driver in their business model. We thought that an experience with crowdSPRING would be really eye opening, as it would present an opportunity to be receptive to the creative ideas of many “creatives” based upon the parameter of sketching out a few definable criterias for artists to explore. The results that we got back were, needless to say, phenomenal!
