cool guide especially the project script you made. I've worked in screencast field for two years and have also written many guides about how to make a good screencast for online marketing. I dare say video marketing will be the leader in its industry soon. Besides what you mentioned, there are tons of screen recording software to choose. And I use DemoCreator for PC and ScreenFlow for MAC.

Here is one of my how to make screencast guide. Hope you enjoy it.

I recently tried doing the recordings both ways, audio first and video first. For me what works best is to record them at the same time and if necessary, run multiple takes with a suitable pause in between each "take". Then while editing I just delete that snippet from the timeline.

For Windows tools, you're missing Camtasia Studio on there - it has an auto-pan/zoom feature for videos where the final size is less than the original screen size. Instrumental for building smaller videos and a really solid tool.

Users should also look into Levelator for getting all audio files the same loudness and I find Audacity (open source) to be a great sound editor for Windows.

I've used ScreenFlow in the past for screencasts and liked it a lot.

There's another product out there that I wanted to add called myBrainshark. In full disclosure, I work for the company. And I'm also a CrowdSpring customer.

It's a free tool found at myBrainshark.com and it lets you easily add your voice (using on-board mic or even just your telephone) to PPT slides, documents, photos, etc.

So, if you have a product demo deck that's ready to go, you can quickly narrate the slides and create an online video. You can also embed a screencast in your myBrainshark presentation, as well.

Here's a Quick Tour presentation if you're interested:
http://my.brainshark.com/A-Quick-Tour-of-myBrainshark-445639928

It's not a replacement for a full-on screencast, but it's a quick and very easy way (and free) to create a video tutorial.

As always, great information here guys. Thanks!

I've always found that recording the audio last is the way to go. When I record screencasts, I read the script to myself as I'm recording and then I edit out all of the page loads, clicks - anything that takes time that doesn't show the viewer something useful, get rid of it. The last step is to record the audio which needs to be read at the pace of the final video. As long as you read the script aloud as you're recording, it should work great. Otherwise you're left editing a video around audio and I think that what's shown in the video should be the focal point.

Just my 2c. I have 4 years in the business as a professional screencaster (demogirl.com) and I know that we all have our own way when it comes to creative work :) Thanks for the great article and for explaining how important video tutorials are!
