As founders we cannot do it on our own. We need a support mechanism. We must have help from family, friends and help ourselves.
Nice spin on the George Burns quote. I'm sure he was meaning that when your family is in another city, it's the opposite to "familiarity breeds contempt". But hey... with the Internet, Skype, cell phones, Twitter, Facebook, and so on I'm sure George Burns would've absolutely been thrilled to have constant communication with his family.

Funny! This very topic was what I was first going to submit for the CS Blog Post Project. Alas, I wrote about something else, thinking no one would want to hear about how I go dizzy, trying to balance being a mom who works from home. Ack!

In any case, great post. I'd like to add my favorite quote that I have plastered above my home office desk: "No success can compensate for failure in the home." (David O. McKay) And with that, I'm off to take my daughter for a walk before coming home to Skype with a client in Cali.

@rachelstene - that is a really nice illustration of the kinds of choices that entrepreneurs and freelancers face daily as they do the balancing act. Ross and I often joke that he stays up until 2am and I am usually working by 6am, so if we could just fill that 4 hour gap we'd have the whole problem solved! :)

@Daniel - Four??!! You are indeed an entrepreneurial tornado. Please send our love to the little ones...

I treat every one of my new ventures like I would having another child. (and I have 4) Just got to love them all equally.

I really like this post. I especially feel the Andrew Grove quote. I work from the home and love it, but it's taken me 8 years to even begin to understand the whole point in working from the home! I just got done with a large job, and after an exhausting week, had reached the final 40 hours of the project, during which I worked 30. The other 10 weren't spent sleeping, but rather doing mundane things like picking my kids up from school and reading books to them (thank God my husband can cook). Those 10 hours with them actually helped keep me sane enough to finish the job well and on time, despite major sleep deprivation.
