fergusdyersmith - much thanks for the kind words. Glad you found a few resources in the list you haven't considered before.

Matt - smart thoughts about process. I agree with you - and this is one of the reasons I love what you guys do at uTest. Thanks too for sharing the whitepaper link - it's a very nice resource with good suggestions.

Katie - Much thanks for leaving your thoughts. Do you see crowdsourcing and co-creation as one and the same, or are there differences?

Enjoyed the post and found lots of great crowdsourcing-to-co-creation examples. In my corner of the world, we often say that "Co-creation is getting other people to do the work and love you for it." To me, that also sums up the true promise of crowdsourcing.

Great post and list, Ross. I won't speak for the other companies you mentioned (though I suspect they'd agree), but in the world of software testing for web, desktop or mobile apps, the crowdsourcing model enables a level and type of testing that wouldn't be possible with traditional outsourcing/offshoring. It's by no means a panacea or a silver bullet (testing is still hard work!), but it offers less friction, lower costs and more diversity of testing coverage.

In my experience, the key to choosing the right crowdsourcing company in a particular category is finding the one who helps get the desired job done *without* disrupting your existing processes or operations. For example, if crowdSPRING required me to change the schedule or workflow of our marketing or product department, then the hidden costs would begin to mount. Luckily for me (and other crowdSPRING customers), they've done a very good job of fitting into my existing worldview! The crowdsourcing companies who will win the greatest market adoption will be those who leverage the model to get things done faster, cheaper and better... but don't expect their customers to adapt their processes.

For those who want to learn more about how crowdsourcing works in the world of designing, copy writing, developing or testing for your products, we have a free whitepaper at: http://www.utest.com/promo/eight-essentials-crowdsourcing (this link gets you past the pesky form).

great list really well put together. We are starting to be asked how companies can use crowds to enable them bootstrap their business (other than sites like your and ours) Few here i hadn't even considered.

Victors and Spoils taking it even further and basing an agency model around it which is interesting... crowdsourcing for those with a bit more cash or the lack in their own ability to judge !
