Thanks, all, for the comments!

@Marek: "The Goal" is a phenomenal book and Goldratt's TOC is indeed the principal concept behind this post. You are correct that the number of orders may be the bottleneck, but the example is intended illustrate the analytical process, while keeping it simple and stripped down - just to give people a little taste of the concept.

@paul: Thanks for the ribbing! The pizza shop case is really just a device to introduce the notion of resource pools and how this type of analysis works. And besides, I do love pizza. :)

I LOVE this enewsletter guys but I'm laughing abit at this analysis because ask any pizza shop (or other small biz) owner and they'd easily be able to identify the bottleneck as the chef. Usually, the bottleneck is really sales, not expenses: They adjust expenses to match. They know all this in their head.

Anyway, while I'm giving you a bit of ribbing I do read this valuable stuff all the time, keep it up :-)...cheers, Paul

What you've described here is a glimpse of Goldratt's Theory of Constraints (TOC).

In reality the system's constraint (as it's technically called), might be the number of orders that you're getting, rather than a physical resource.

Theory of Constraints is fully developed in the timeless business novel, The Goal by dr Eliyahu Goldratt http://bit.ly/5bDPQu (amazon.com link w/ my associate code).

For more TOC resources & videos, check out http://toc.tv/ as well.

Happy TOC-ing,

Marek (http://marek-kowalczyk.pl)
