Happy Anniversary Ross and Mike | May 7th, 2009

We launched publicly on May 6, 2008, making yesterday our one year anniversary – a day that, it turns out, we did not celebrate although we’ll definitely remember. It was a difficult and humbling day for our team and, in the end, we sent the following email to everyone who registered on our site during the past year (click the image to see it in full size):

So, that sums it up. We are indeed humbled by this experience, but we also remain committed to learning. Learning about our business, our users, our technology, and our community. Please let us know if there are things we could be doing better. (Ross has written a detailed post about this event and the lessons we learned from it, and you can click here to read that, too)

Ross and Mike -

The letter is appreciated. So is the work you are putting in to get the site to be the best it can be. My father-in-law had a saying for when you make a mistake. “Do the next right thing.”

You are doing that. Happy Anniversary.

Dear Ross and Mike
No one is Perfect and to accept the mistake is a whole big thing. Whatever the performance of the site has been for the past few days just keep the ball rolling and wish you luck.

Happy Anniversary!!!

Happy anniversary guys! You’ve obviously grown faster than you imagined you would – good problem to have but I gotta tell ya – I’ll be glad when its all fixed!

kantspel on May 8, 2009 at 6:03 pm CST

Congrats and thank you for your great website. Stuff happens. We all know the perils of internet server meltdowns. Thanks for responding to the problem so quickly. FYI …Some of us lost our entries for projects. Part of the fix needs to be a Plan B for technical problems like this. Current policy recommends that the creative contact the Project manager and ask for help. I’ve
made several attempts to contact the Project manager in my case and not gotten a response. We work many, many hours on our entries just for the chance of winning. It seems only fair that our work is at least seen by the Project manager. Maybe a 12 hour required extension for these situations or some type of arbitration group could be considered. Not a whine, just trying to make things better.

Best site ever!! Keep up the good work! Kinks means that the site it working right! Good on you and your team and the quick responses from you about our concerns :) A pleasure to be a part of – even though I only found you a month ago! LOL

There’s nothing that I respect more about a company, than when they maintain an open line of communication with their users. While other companies may have never really even addressed these technical issues, I have followed along with your emails……and, I respect you ALL that much more for being humble about it…..and conveying that you were working diligently on the problem.

I joined your affiliate program, through commission junction, about 2 months ago…….I just had my 12th referral, and my 2nd sale………I’m happy to promote a company like this :) Great job everyone over at crowdSPRING! :)

erikbetti on May 9, 2009 at 12:17 am CST

Ross, Mike, the Dev Team, and anyone else I’m leaving out – you’re all doing a fantastic job, period. Don’t think otherwise.

As everyone else here has said, you’ve done a simply amazing job of launching this site, promoting it, coding it, making it a community – everything here is a testament to your dedication and hard work – it’s noticed, understood, and respected.

We all understand that crap happens – the intarwubst is a crazy, crazy place, and you’re doing a simply fantastic job – regardless of the issues you’ve faced. As a company, you’ve responded honestly and candidly to your setbacks, and addressed them head-on – no one can expect anything more.

Please don’t be to hard on yourselves – the pressure must be insane – but please bear in mind that you’re still kicking tons of ass and taking tons of names, and we’re still on your side.

I’m still thrilled to be a member of this site, and I’ll gladly deal with the growing pains, no questions asked.

You’re doing excellent work – we haven’t forgotten that.

Happy Anniversary!
- Erik

@ArtbyAudree @ansys @Enhancephotos @PattyMarler @omarcards @DarkAngel-777 @akucharski @ElectricBureau @adversary @pinchedpixel – Thanks so much!

@kantspel We’ve put in place fixes that should help. You should now see right away when your image doesn’t upload – we have a “missing image” graphic which shows – before, it was not easy to see this.

We do know that each of you invests a lot of time in the work. We wrote to all affected buyers and suggested that they extend the projects for 3 days – many of them have and we’ve been extending and posting updates to the projects to let everyone know.

And we’re working on further safeguards too so that this type of situation doesn’t repeat itself.

@cylet @Brinki @Rapunzel Mucho thanks!

@x3xsolxdierx3x Thanks for the kind words and the referrals!

@erikbetty – Erik – thank you for those warm words. The last week has been a pretty amazing time. Lots of lows, but the response from our community, as seen in the comments to this blog and in hundreds of private messages to us – has been absolutely incredible. It’s like rocket fuel for us. :)

@Ro C @galbiati @funwulf @Neonimage Thanks so much!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the letter, so well said.

I am going through similar issues with one of my sites – growing faster than expected and causing major drama. I could use your text verbatim to describe our sentiments.

Your straight, to the point comments and acceptance of responsibility is refreshing. My confidence in you grew ten-fold. Sometimes the manner in which we handle adversity tells ours customers and partners more than any market message could ever convey!

Much respect,
Lisa

No matter what issues are we having today, tomorrow we will laugh about this and said dam the was hard but we make it…. and there is no other site the has the courage to said they mistakes. but only this one and I believed is because you really feel like we are a community a family. is a year already. Amazing how time fly and how this site has growl in so little time. and get the reputations it deserved because let me tell you many people is scare and they have to. because you guys are doing a great work you guys actually care for us… not like other sites. we actually have a great communication even when my English is not all the… but you are given to a community not only the beginners designers where they get a chance here to be better. but also to get a full portfolio, you helping the new fresh designer come to life, you are helping the new companies get they new image in one affordable prize. by giving more choices they ever will image. is just great to work with someone the really listen and help you grow and they actually care. for their community. and they try to do things the right way. I’m happy to be part of this big process. and get to know you guys. really have been great… at get respect front you. no matter how I’m and I’m sure every one here is getting same attention as I’m because all this comments says a lot of a community where everyone is working together with respect and honestly great work… and really HAPPY ANIVERSARY and like Bob Marley will say Get up, stand up! – Don’t give up the fight!

Myke on May 14, 2009 at 7:09 am CST

Happy Anniversary to all at crowdspring…your doing a great job. I’m sure you have the respect of all the creatives that have joined the site in your first year….long may it continue.

@ChristianCruz & @thevierde Thanks. We promised ourselves cake (maybe even an ice cream cake, when we push our refactored code).

@jkBrams We won’t give up, that’s for sure. And we’re working hard to fix the current issues so that we have a little breathing room to finalize the new code.

@lotkaP Thanks so much for your kind words. We’re very happy you’ve joined our community too. :)

@photoshopHERO Much thanks!

@uosipa Very kind of you to say and thank so much for your wishes.

@abbyvalta & @erikbetti Thanks!

@Lisa We very much agree. Something that we fundamentally believe in and the response from our entire community tends to suggest that the community prefers our open and honest approach.

@PANTERA Thanks so much for those wonderful words. We truly treasure the community we’ve built together and look forward to growing and learning together. Love Bob Marley – great quote!

@Myke Thanks so much!

What programming languages and practices were used to develop Crowdspring?…

We looked at many different options, including hiring an overseas team, building our own team, and hiring a firm to help. We decided to hire a firm in Chicago to help us develop version one of the software (starting in July 2007), but they were unable …
